What's new

  • No release-specific new features documented

The New features or enhancements page lists no release-specific additions and refers readers to the FortiOS 7.4 New Features Guide.

Breaking changes

  • #1240706

NGFW policy mode drops traffic when IPS sockets are unavailable

Previously, traffic could bypass inspection while the IPS engine was starting, upgrading, or manually stopped. NGFW policy-mode VDOMs now drop traffic when IPS sockets are unavailable.

  • #1245249

More CLI commands are permitted before registration

    Devices may now use these command scopes before registration for central management, ZTP, and LTP configuration: `config firewall policy`, `config router setting`, `config router static`, `config router static6`, `config system admin`, `config system central-management`, `config system dns`, `config system interface`, `config system pppoe-interface`, and `config system settings`.

  • NP7 default QoS type can no longer be shaping

    The command `config system npu` / `set default-qos-type {policing | shaping}` / `end` can no longer select `shaping`; `default-qos-type` may only be set to `policing`.

  • NP7 shaping mechanisms are assigned by shaping type

For NP7 sessions, policy traffic shaping, per-IP shaping, and regular port shaping always use the TPE accounting and shaping module. Interface shaping profiles, also called multiclass shaping, use QTM exclusively. Supported interfaces include physical, LAG, and VLAN interfaces over physical or LAG links, with a maximum of 100 interfaces.

Security fixes

  • #1179021CVE-2025-54821

FortiOS no longer vulnerable to CVE-2025-54821

FortiOS 7.4.13 addresses the referenced vulnerability. Fortinet directs users to FortiGuard PSIRT for further information.

Features removed

  • Proxy features remain unsupported on 2 GB RAM models

    Starting with FortiOS 7.4.4, proxy-related features are no longer supported on FortiGate/FortiWiFi 40F, 50G, 60E, 60F, 80E, and 90E series and variants, plus 2 GB FortiGate-Rugged 60F models.

  • NP7 shaping option removed from default QoS type

The `shaping` value is no longer available for `default-qos-type`; only `policing` is permitted.

Upgrade notes

  • Use Fortinet Upgrade Path Tool for supported paths

Select FortiGate/FortiOS, the exact product model, current version, and target version in Fortinet's Upgrade Path Tool. Do not infer a direct upgrade path from version numbers alone.

  • Individual devices support manual or automatic upgrades

An individual FortiGate can be upgraded manually or automatically according to the FortiGuard upgrade path.

  • Security Fabric supports immediate or scheduled coordinated upgrades

Multiple FortiGate devices in a Security Fabric can be upgraded manually, immediately, or on a schedule according to the FortiGuard upgrade path.

  • Health-check 6000/7000 chassis before every upgrade step

Verify all FIMs and FPMs are synchronized and healthy before upgrading, after each step in a multi-step path, and after completion.

  • 6000/7000 components use one firmware image

FortiGate 6000 management boards and FPCs, and FortiGate 7000 FIMs and FPMs, run the same image. Start the upgrade from the primary 6000 management board or the primary FIM in the primary 7000 chassis.

  • Enable graceful chassis upgrade to reduce interruption

For a FortiGate 6000/7000 FGCP cluster, use `config system ha` / `set upgrade-mode uninterruptible` / `end`. During the process, the secondary upgrades first, traffic fails over, and the original primary then upgrades.

  • Session pickup improves graceful-upgrade synchronization

    Use `config system ha` / `set session-pickup enable` / `end` to improve session synchronization during a graceful upgrade.

  • FortiGate 7000F requires a session-sync device for pickup

    For 7000F, session pickup requires `session-sync-dev`. Fortinet recommends a LAG using the slot-1 and slot-2 FIM M1 100 Gbps management interfaces connected through a switch. Configuration includes `config system ha`, `set upgrade-mode uninterruptible`, `set session-sync-dev <lag>`, `set session-pickup enable`, and `end`.

  • Simultaneous chassis upgrades interrupt traffic

Standalone 6000/7000 systems and clusters using `upgrade-mode simultaneous` upgrade all components in one step and can interrupt traffic for several minutes. Schedule during a quiet maintenance period.

  • Confirm uninterruptible mode is supported for the target release

Some firmware upgrades do not support `upgrade-mode uninterruptible`; verify support in the release notes before starting.

Resolved issues
